The government thinks Dexia will not be a problem for the next 2 years

The government thinks Dexia will not be a problem for the next 2 years, according to L’Echo and De Tijd. “The Belgian stability program assures me that with the way things are now, there is no risk of needing to use the Belgian guarantee now or within the next two years. Dexia’s financial situation is under control”, the Finance Minister, Johan Van Overtveldt, told the Chamber on Monday. Last month, the amount Belgium has given the ailing group had reached 37 billion euros. This is the maximum amount Belgium would have to spend if Dexia went under.
After Belgium, France, and Luxemburg rescued Dexia, the three States had to give guarantees so the bank could still raise funds on the market.
