Ethical hackers to help businesses

Several Belgian businesses, including Telenet, Belfiusn and Gamme, are using ethical hackers to test the security of their IT systems, reveals De Morgen on Wednesday. This type of hacker is useful to companies to check how reliable their computer systems, their databases, and their websites are. They get modestly paid or do it on a voluntary basis, for the glory of it, and show businesses what is wrong with their security systems.

According to Isabelle Marchand from Febelfin, the financial sector federation, several banks use the services of ethical hackers. What they do is a criminal offence in Belgium just like the actions of real hackers. New legislation should clarify things, but in the meantime, businesses make the rules if hackers want to collaborate with them.
