Belgians keep a record amount of money in deposit accounts

Deposit accounts have seen a 15% increase in deposits since the start of 2015, reaching 66.5 billion euros at the end of May. This is a new record, according to figures from the National Bank. These figures were relayed by L’Echo on Wednesday. This large increase in the amount of money stored in deposit accounts means it has even surpassed the amount kept in savings accounts. The amount kept in savings accounts has gone up by 1.5% in 2015, reaching 262.3 billion euros at the end of May. The fall in transfers from deposit accounts to savings accounts can be explained by the difference in the interest earned on the two types of accounts. Interest on savings accounts has continued to fallover the last few years.
