The number of online supermarket orders have increased by half since last weekend and since the terror threat level was raised, indicated the spokesman for Carrefour and Delhaize on Tuesday. This increase was mainly seen in the 19 Brussels communes and surrounding areas.
From Carrefour’s point of view, its spokesman Baptiste van Outryve, considers that there has been a 50% increase in online orders. Delhaize confirmed the situation was much the same – a 40-50% increase in online ordering since Saturday, according to Roel Dekelver.
Moreover, sales at store level do not seem to have been adversely affected by the terrorist threat. “The value of the average shopping basket has also risen,” stresses Baptiste van Outryve. “This tends to indicate that customers are preferring to do a large weekly shop instead of several smaller ones.”
The vast majority of the 70 Carrefour shops in Brussels are open bar three (the City 2, Métro Rogier and Berchem-Sainte-Agathe locations). Most Delhaize stores in Brussels were also open, with the exception of the stores at Berchem-Sainte-Agathe and the shopping centre in Anderlecht. “There has been a military presence in front of the entrances of several of our shops and we implemented additional security measures,” the spokesman adds. The Colruyt group has not seen any noticeable difference, its spokesman Jan Derom states, saying “We don’t have many shops in Brussels and all of them remained open, except for a few which closed on Saturday evening, so all-in-all, we haven’t been hugely affected.”
