The sum that BASF, the second largest chemical producer in the world, owns the Belgian state is “much less” than the 200 million euros announced in several media outlets recently, according to the group. Several Belgian media newspapers singled out BASF as the prime victim of the European Commission ruling. The Commission stated that Belgian tax benefits to multinationals are illegal and interferes with competition.

“The sum concerned over a 10 year period, is much lower than what has been indicated in the newspapers”, confirms the German group and reminds of the “important investments that they have carried out in Antwerp” during this 10 year period, which amounts to up to 150 million euros per year. BASF employs about 3000 people in Belgium.
