Wallonia collected 76 million euros on a net of VAT basis in the first four months of the application of the kilometric tax, as informed to Belga by Frank Chenot, Director of Sofico. This figure does not take into consideration fines applied for the infraction of tax rules, which add up to 320,000 euros (202,000 euros in notified fines and 118,000 euros in fines applied on the spot).
The kilometric tax brought in about half less in Wallonia (76 million euros) than in Flanders, where approximately 140 million euros were collected, as announced Wednesday by the Flemish Tax Administration. “It is true that Wallonia has more roads (2,250 km of toll routes versus 2,136 in Flanders), but the region has less industrial centres than cities such as Ghent or Antwerp, which have heavy highway traffic due to their ports,” explained Frank Chenot.
These figures correspond quite closely to estimates made prior to the application of the tax, added the Director of Sofico. “The traffic density of lorries is higher in Flanders than in Wallonia,” he concluded.
The kilometric tax for heavy vehicles entered into force on April 1st, 2016 in the three regions. Every lorry must have an OBU, a box allowing to calculate the kilometres travelled between toll stations.
