More and more Flemings plan to own their own businesses and go on do so, according to the 15th Edition of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) of the Vlerick Business School, published on Thursday.
Of the close to 1,000 Flemings who participated in the GEM survey, 48% felt there would be enough opportunities in the next six months for them to go into business, while one in every 10 said they intended to launch a business of their own within the next three years. “These are the highest results attained since the GEM began,” the business school, located in Ghent, noted.
According to the study, a record 5.4% of Flemish respondents said they had already launched their businesses or were in the process of doing so. However, Flanders still has one of the lowest rankings in Europe where business start-ups are concerned, with only Germany and Italy scoring lower,
The study was based on telephone interviews conducted among 2,000 persons aged 18 to 64, including 1000 in Flanders.
