Record-high freight transport at Port of Ghent since beginning of the year

The Port of Ghent reached a record in freight traffic in the first nine months of the year. The record was reached mainly as a result of ocean transport, announced Tuesday the Port of Ghent.  

From January to September, 21.5 million tonnes of merchandise were carried by maritime transport. With river transport added, the Port of Ghent totalled 38.1 million tonnes transported, representing an increase of 2.6% in relation to the same period last year.

Ocean transport registered an increase of 12.5% in the third quarter. In two years, there has been an increase in maritime transport of 21%. Products transported through Ghent are mainly iron ore, coal, scrap iron, naphtha (liquid by-product of petroleum distillation).

River transport increased by 7% to 5.4 million tonnes in the third quarter.
