Flanders organizes bulk purchase of electric cars

Flanders will organize a bulk purchase of electric cars and their charging systems was heard on the side lines of the Brussels auto show.

This task was entrusted to the Bobex quote request platform, which said that was a first in Europe. Consumers will be able to choose among four models, and will benefit from a significant reduced group price, as well as from additional promotions. Registration will close on 15 May.

The Flemish government aims at raising the electric car share in the north of the country to 7.5% by 2020, from 1.94% late December, and 0.6% in 2017. The sale of this type of vehicle has certainly increased in recent months, but remains very limited in comparison with conventional cars.

Four models were selected for this bulk purchase, which includes the charging mechanism: Nissan Leaf, Hyundai KONA, Peugeot iON and Renault ZOE. Those interested will be allowed to perform a test drive with one vehicle or more. More information can be found at: www.samenelektrisch.be.

The Belgian Automobile and Cycle Federation (FEBIAC), which represents car manufacturers, is not very enthusiastic about this initiative. According to them, rather than dealing with the commercial aspects, the authorities should be concerned with a secure electrical supply. How else can you get people to run on electric, FEBIAC asks?

And higher-up in the sector they are requesting a long-term vision on the transition towards green energy. "This bulk purchase attracts attention and will convince a number of people, but the momentum will last only for a moment."
