Belgian NGO calls for donations in bitcoin

A Belgian NGO has called for potential donors to think of Bitcoin when they want to donate to future projects. Memisa, a medical NGO active in development cooperation, announced today that is has chosen to accept donations in cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin as of February 2019.

"The acceptance of Bitcoin opens the door to major innovations within our projects through the technology of smart contracts or allows us to quickly send large sums of money to anywhere in the world when this is needed," said Frank De Paepe, general manager Memisa. This makes Memisa the first Belgian NGO to accept this type of donation to support projects in development cooperation.

"We are very enthusiastic about the opportunities that Bitcoin has to offer to an NGO in development cooperation. It is an innovative technology that in our opinion should not be neglected or ignored, added De Paepa.

Bitcoin is a virtual, decentralized currency famous the world over that can be sent by anyone in the world in a matter of minutes. The choice to take donations in this form will benefit the NGO, due to "low transaction costs, international transfers and transparency of accounts are properties of cryptocurrency," explained Thomas Vanderstraeten, Blockchain expert.
