Tournai becomes the first Walloon town to allow people to pay for parking by smartphone

After Asse and Roulers, Tournai became the third Belgian town to allow motorists to pay for parking via the Mobigo application. Tournai was chosen as the pilot city for the Walloon government’s Smart City project just over a year ago. The user must enter their number plate and credit card details when they open the application. Users open the Mobigo app when they have found a parking space, and close it when they leave it. If they forget, they might have to pay for half a day’s parking, or a 15 euro fine.

The advantage is that only the exact sum for the length of time they parked is taken out of the user’s account. Those working for City Parking, which looks after inside car parks, will have access to the app’s users via their database.

The user must be able to connect to the Internet and have geolocation. Tournai was chosen as the pilot city for the Walloon government’s “smart city” development project last year. It was given a subsidy of 300,000 euros.
