The Belgian centre for cyber security has launched a national awareness campaign on internet security. The centre invites Belgian citizens to modify their behaviour in order to better protect their ICT tools.
According to a University of Ghent study, 68% of Belgians have user profiles of high exposure to the risk of cybercrime because they do not sufficiently secure their computers, tablets or smartphones. Some 6.5 million persons thus help cybercriminals unwittingly, states the slogan of the campaign carried out by public entities.
“Small actions allow protecting oneself as a citizen, and also as an employer or employee,” added Christine Darville, President of Cyber Security Coalition. “Approximately 97% of companies have an internet connection and 79% an internet site; therefore, deficiencies in security also affect the world of business.”
The campaign suggests internet users to visit the www.safeonweb.be site in order to benefit from advice for scanning their computers for viruses and for improving the safety of their ICT tools. An on-line test also allows identifying possible imprudent behaviour on the web.
“We particularly recommend internet users to use an antivirus software, to update, to remain vigilant regarding phishing attempts, and to use pass phrases instead of pass words,” advised Miguel De Bruycker, Director of the Belgian centre for cyber security.
The awareness campaign, organized in the sphere of the European Cyber Security Month, will continue until the end of October.
