A City Tree is installed for three months at the Mont des Arts in Brussels

On Tuesday afternoon, the City of Brussels installed a City Tree at the Mont des Arts in the presence of Mayor Yvan Mayeur. It is a high-tech tree that has the ability to purify air, equal to 275 trees. Its effects will be tested for a period of three months.

This "City Tree" is composed of a plant wall with an area of ??2.80 meters by 2.80 meters that is comprised of 1,682 individual plants, which are intended to absorb fine particles and nitrogen dioxide. Sensors analyse the quality of the air. The plant is equipped with solar panels that power the watering pump as well as sensors for measuring soil moisture and measuring instruments. A rainwater harvesting system is in place to increase its autonomy. The City Tree is also a source of freshness.

"The City Tree also allows a reduction of the air temperature within a radius of up to five meters", says Ahmed El Ktibi, alderman of Green Spaces, the Environment and Energy. "This natural refreshment without recourse to electricity makes it possible to effectively combat the urban heat islands". This facility has already been tested in several major European cities, such as Paris, Berlin and Oslo. The City Tree thus represents a contribution that is both original in terms of urban design, and is also ready for the fight against pollution in the city. Its installation in Brussels arose from a proposal made within the framework of the Climate Plan, developed recently in consultation with the Brussels population.

Mobilising the Energy and EcoConseil departments, the City of Brussels wishes to raise awareness of this plant wall in the population with regard to its behaviour so as to improve the quality of the environment.
