North Sea windmills to supply a million Belgian homes with energy in 2018

Windmills installed in Belgium's North Sea waters produced last year 2,867 gigawatts/hour of electricity, corresponding to the average consumption of close to 800,000 families, the Belgian Offshore Platform reported on Friday. Currently, 877 megawatts (MW) of windmills are installed in Belgian waters as against 712 MW in 2016. The energy is generated in four windmill parks, C-Power 325MW, Belwind 171 MW, Northwind 216 MW and Nobelwind 165 MW.

A fifth offshore windmill project, Rentel, is scheduled to begin production in the second half of 2018.

Once the Rentel park is operational, electricity production from Belgium’s North Sea windmills will amount to 3,600 gigawatts/hour, equivalent to the electricity consumed by a million households, Belgium Offshore Platform stressed.

The Platform brings together the main partners that invest in windmill energy production in Belgium’s North Sea waters.
