Europe paves the way for the development of super-fast internet

The European Union has got one step closer to developing super-fast internet. The European Parliament and the member States have reached a political compromise on releasing the radio spectrum for 5G from 2020.

They reached agreement on a number of key elements in the “telecoms” packet on Thursday. The European Commission wants to use this to launch the development of super-fast internet in Europe. They have agreed on the release of radio frequencies from 2020, the attribution of 20 year licences to provide businesses with more investment security and closer coordination on the procedures for attributing radio frequencies.

“We are laying the foundations to deploy 5G throughout the whole of Europe. It is essential as a large number of applications, self-driving cars, telemedicine and smart cities cannot develop without an excellent network connection”, says the vice-president of the European Commission Andrus Ansip.

The Commission hopes the member States and the European Parliament will reach an agreement on other elements of the packet. Europe fell behind in the development of 4G and the Commission does not want to repeat that mistake. It wants to have 5G in all the large cities and transport networks by 2025.
