Charleroi site to play central role in new Alstom 150-million-euro Norwegian railway contract

The French company Alstom announced on Tuesday that it had landed a contract with Norway’s railway authority to equip its trains with the ERTMS on-board train control solution and to manage the system for up to 25 years. Alstom’s Charleroi site will play an essential role in the execution of the contract.

The deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) onboard system should help increase the effectiveness and reliability of the Norwegian railway network by reducing delays in the transport of passengers and goods while guaranteeing a maximum level of safety.

Serial train fittings are to begin in 2021 and the first trains are to start operating on Norwegian railway lines in 2022. The entire rolling stock - 467 trains of 55 different types - should be equipped before September 2024.

The contract rewards the “rigorous work” of the technical and supply teams at the ERTMS Alstom centre of excellence in Charleroi, Alstom said in a press release.

The design of the generic solution will be led, developed and tested in Charleroi as well as the different applications for the 55 types of trains, Alstom stated.

The on-board equipment will be supplied by the Alstom site in Villeurbanne (France). Its deployment on the 467 trains will be done by the project office in Oslo, Norway, with the support of the Charleroi site.

Work on the various components of the project will be done from 2018 to 2021 and 35 staff members in Charleroi will be involved. The site is recruiting new staff in project management and railway engineering, Alstom said in the press release.
