The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, wants to get rid of the troïka. It is made up of experts from the European Commission, the Central European Bank (CEB) and the International Monetary Funds (IMF). This comes after the Greek government refused to hold talks with the troïka on Friday, according to the German paper Handelsblatt. Their information came from sources within the European Commission. Germany would not ‘in principle” be against a reform of the troïka either, according to the paper. The troïka was created during the debt crisis to supervise the finances of States on a financial support program.
Jean-Claude Juncker is against the Greeks being given a rebate. He wants a solution on how to reform the troïka quickly, the Handelsblatt continues.
The Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, in expected in Brussels on Wednesday for a meeting with Mr Juncker.
Seen as a symbol of austerity and the country being put under supervision, the troïka is hated in Greece. Jean-Claude Juncker would see the troika returning to Athens as a “provocation” by the Greeks.
