The Belgian justice department is investigating suspicions Germany has been spying on Belgium for years, the De Tijd said on Sunday. The information has been confirmed by the Federal Prosecutor’s office. It decided to launch an investigation into the practices of the German intelligence service BND on Friday. If the espionage is confirmed, the investigation will become a diplomatic issue between Belgium and Germany, as well as a judiciary investigation.
The BND, one of the three German secret services, planted bugs on Internet cables in Europe, according to confidential documents presented during a conference in front of the German Parliament last week. They were leaked to the press.
The Austrian MEP Peter Pilz and the Belgian MP Stefan Van Hecke (Greens) revealed that bugs were also planted in Belgium. They were planted at the request of the American NSA (National Security Agency).
