Europe wants to reform Loi Major

The European Commission has requested Belgium reform its “Loi Major”, the act governing dock work, by October 23rd, according to information published in the Gazet van Antwerpen newspaper on Wednesday. Both the current and previous governments spent over a year negotiating with Europe in a bid to avoid being slapped with a fine. According to the Gazet, the European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, wrote to the Minister of Employment Kris Peeters to ask him to amend the law, and in particular the “pool” system. This system is the cornerstone for the Loi Major and enables only authorised dockers to work in ports.

The European Court of Justice found Spain guilty last December of using this system, although nothing has changed on the ground.
