The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev travelled on April 14 to his neighbouring country Uzbekistan to hold a meeting with Uzbekistan’s President Islam Karimov. The two leaders discussed several bilateral trade and security collaborations.

Kazakhstan’s largest exports to Uzbekistan relate to metals and animal & vegetable oils. The country imports a range of agricultural products such as fruits, vegetables and fertilizers, as well as textile products and vehicles.

There are hundreds of Kazakh and Uzbek companies that operate in each others countries and many joint ventures exist.

Besides the strong trading partnership, the two countries share a large border where many trans-boundary rivers cross.

Both leaders expressed gratefulness for the two countries’ mutual respect when it comes to the use of water resources and called on all other Central Asian governments to rely on the universally accepted norms of international water law, as per UN conventions.

The two were united in declaring that the water resources are a “joint asset for the region’s peoples” and that the region’s peace and stability depends on the “sensible and just” use of the resources.

President Nazarbayev thanked President Karimov for his country’s support during Kazakhstan’s bid for a United Nations non-permanent member seat for 2017-2018. He emphasized the good relations between two countries and expressed his wish to keep strengthening the trust and friendship so as to pass it on to the next generation.
