Europe looks into additional rights for online press editors

The European Commission is looking into additional rights for online press editors, by making it possible to for them to charge search engines and other online companies that use their articles.

“The Commission is considering the possibility of giving online editors more rights. This would be a way of recognising their role as investors in the content, and putting them in a better position to negotiate with other parties on the market”, a Commission spokesman said on Friday.

“This has nothing to do with the European tax on search engines”, he added. This proposition is part of a Commission initiative that aims to modernise copyright rules. It is expected to be presented during the second half of September.
