Visa for Syrian family – Charles Michel “convinced” that other European countries will support Belgian position
Michel hopes to receive European support

Prime Minister Charles Michel plans to explain to his European colleagues – on the fringe of the European Council meeting to be held in Brussels today – the legal situation which Belgium faces in the case of the humanitarian visa requested by a Syrian family. He said he is “convinced that the position of the Belgian government will be supported to a considerable degree” by the other European countries.

The Belgian government is in a judicial show of strength with a Syrian family from Aleppo which is supported by a Belgian family that wishes to sponsor them, regarding the issuance of a humanitarian visa which would allow the family to leave Syria and find refuge in Belgium. The case is from now on related to the fate of another case which is the object of prejudicial matters at the Constitutional Court and at the European Court of Justice.

Upon his arrival at the European Council, Charles Michel said “I hope we are able to send a strong message. There has to be more respect for citizens, more show of respect for the humanitarian situation,” he commented.

But when asked specifically regarding the humanitarian visa for the Syrian family, the Prime Minister stated that he would explain to his European colleagues the legal situation which Belgium faces. “I am convinced that the position of the Belgian government will be supported to a great degree by the European colleagues,” he concluded.
