Ex-President of Czech Republic Vlaclav Klaus argues for country’s exit from EU
Mr Klaus is clear in his view: “The time has come to prepare our country for withdrawal from the European Union.”

Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic from 2003 to 2013, has argued today that the country should leave the European Union. This comes as the European Commission is taking infringement proceedings against Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic for their persistent failure to welcome refugees.

For the former Conservative President, this is a good reason to argue in favour of leaving the EU. Mr Klaus called for contesting the infringement proceedings “both in principle and vociferously”, when addressing the media. He feels that the Czech Republic cannot be forced to form a multicultural society.

Mr Klaus only anticipates there being a single solution, “The time has come to prepare our country for withdrawal from the European Union.”

The liberal economist, a pillar of the political landscape since the Velvet Revolution, is a fierce Eurosceptic. In 2009, he notably went so far as to compare the EU, of which the Czech Republic has been a member since 2004, to the former Soviet Union.
