Greenpeace installed solar panels on the European Parliament building in Brussels as it hosted the penultimate round of talks on a European directive on renewable energy on Thursday and used the electricity they generated to make vegan ice cream. This was part of a series of actions by the non-governmental organization in favour of renewable energy.
Earlier, a group of 20 activists and climbers deployed a banner in front of the European Parliament information centre and installed a giant sun with the inscription “Our sun. Our power. Our future."
Both banner and sun were covered with hundreds of selfies sent by European citizens calling on the European Union to begin a fast transition from fossil fuels and nuclear energy to renewable energies in citizens’ hands.
“The time for energy monopolies is long past. It’s time now for energy democracy,” Greenpeace said. It called on the European Parliament to defend the right of individuals, cooperatives and cities to produce and sell their own renewable electricity, without prohibitive tariffs or excessive formalities.
