Belgium lags behind the rest of Europe in the fight against fine particles, according to a European Commission report quoted on Wednesday by L’Echo newspaper. The country needs to cut its emissions of fine particles by 39% by 2030 and is the only European Union (EU) country that has not yet taken strong action to reduce such emissions.
Belgium’s target is far from the most ambitious one. The EU as a whole aims to reduce its emissions by 49%. Only Lithuania, Finland and Sweden have lower 2030 targets than Belgium.
According to the Commission’s progress report on early prospects for clean air, Belgium is by far the only country where decisive action remains to be taken.
According to another Commission report, the Clean Air Outlook, the main measures Belgium needs to take against fine particles regard residential housing, especially legislating against the use of wood for heating, l’Echo wrote.
