NATO Summit: Charles Michel calls for “unity and solidarity”

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said on arriving at Wednesday’s summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) that the meeting would be of “crucial importance” for maintaining “unity and solidarity” in the Alliance. Unity within the organisation has, in fact, been jeopardized by the pressing, virulent demands by US President Donald Trump for the European members of the alliance to increase their defence spending.

Belgium has not met the 2%-of-GDP threshold for military spending, but the Prime Minister said the country had stopped cutting back on its defence budget.

“We’ve decided to stop making budget cuts in defence and move on to an investment strategy,” Michel said in a brief reaction. “We shall continue to do so to ensure security and stability.”
