Brexit: Geert Bourgeois calls upon the British “sense of responsibility”
Geert Bourgeois is highly concerned about the impact of the Brexit decision on Belgium, as well as Britain.

The Flemish Minister President, Geert Bourgeois, is hoping that the British parliament will approve the Brexit agreement. He called for its “sense of responsibility” on Wednesday morning, speaking during the broadcast De Ochtend (“Morning News”) on Radio 1 (owned by VRT).

The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, is due on Wednesday afternoon, to set out “the terms of the draft withdrawal agreement” concluded with European negotiators, a text for which parliament must give its green light. Yet, the initial reactions from the Labour party, members of the Conservative Cabinet and the Democratic Unionist Party, to date are far from positive.

Geert Bourgeois stressed, “The position is very, very precarious at the present time.” He added, “It is a highly important moment not only for the well-being of Britain as a nation, but also for our country, our SMEs and the 16,000 jobs linked to them.”

For the moment we know very little about the content of the divorce agreement, concluded between London and Brussels after the negotiations. On the British side, the Prime Minister, Theresa May, has called her ministers for a meeting at 2 p.m. British time (3 p.m. CET) for a detailed examination of the text.
