European Heads of State and Government reiterated on Friday that the Brexit deal concluded with outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May would not be renegotiated.
European Council President Donald Tusk said the 27 members of the EU were looking forward to working with the next British head of government. Europe wanted to avoid a disorderly Brexit and to maintain as close links as possible with the United Kingdom, but the withdrawal agreement would not be renegotiated, Tusk said.
The European leaders spent only about 10 minutes discussing Brexit on Friday, the second day of their summit in Brussels.
“There is nothing new because we repeated unanimously there will be no renegotiation of the withdrawal agreement,” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said.
The Conservatives in the British Parliament on Thursday evening chose former Foreign Minister Boris Johnson and his successor, Jeremy Hunt, as the final candidates in the race to replace Theresa May.
Johnson, the clear frontrunner, said he was prepared to fight to renegotiate the deal with the European Union, even though the EU has ruled out any renegotiation.
