The Belgian Davis Cup tennis team, made up of David Goffin, Steve Darcis, Ruben Bemelmans, Kimmer Coppejans and Niels Desein, and the captain Johan Van Herck, has been elected Belgian Sports team of the year 2015.
Johan Van Herck is very happy: “It’s a very special team this year, in an individual sport like tennis. That means something. I think that as a team, we are among the best in tennis”.
“I think that the team still has room to progress, especially David (Goffin) and Kimmer (Coppejans). It will be difficult next year against Croatia (in the first round of the Davis Cup), but we have a good team. We have to believe that. We have proved that we are capable of beating good teams. We just lost against Andy Murray, who was too good”.
Steve Darcis said: “We will never forget the final. Playing in Ghent in front of 12,000 spectators was exceptional. Moments like that are why we play tennis. I’m 31, and it’s maybe my best year. The fact that the Red Devils have won it for the past two years may give us our best chance. We got a good draw, but we have also won important matches. We can be proud of that.
For me, the two unforgettable moments of this Davis Cup campaign is the victory point I won against Argentina in the semi-final and when the curtain came down on the final on Friday: we all got goosebumps”.
