Nafissatou Thiam, the surprise heptathalon Olympic champion, carried the Belgian flag during the closing ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee (Belgium’s National Olympic Committee) announced during Sunday that she had accepted this symbolic task.
The athlete, who celebrated her twenty-second birthday participated in two events having scooped the top medal in Rio, along with Greg Van Avermaet. He had the crowning glory of the gold medal in road cycling the day after the opening ceremony.
During, the opening ceremony, Olivia Borlée, also from the field of athletics, carried the Belgian flag as all competitors entered the Maracanã Stadium.
