“Belgium and Spain were like night and day,” Thomas Meunier, a member of the Belgian squad, said on Friday following the Red Devils’ 0-2 defeat by La Roja on the previous day in a friendly match at the Roi Baudouin stadium in Brussels. “I am more disappointed by our performance than by the whistles of the crowd. That reaction was due to our poor showing,” Meunier said. “We formed a solid bloc for the first half-hour. We moved the ball around. All that changed after the goal. When you allow Spain to play its game and define the tempo, it becomes very complicated.”

“Spain kept up the pressure and was all over the field. We lost too many balls and were too passive. If we want results at the European and world levels, we have to catch up,” said the PSG defender, who added, however: “Yesterday’s defeat had a positive side to it. The new staff can see what still has to be worked on”.

Leander Dendoncker, called up on Tuesday, was the only representative of the Jupiler Pro League in the Red Devils squad. “It’s nice to be there as the only player in the Belgian championship,” said the 21-year-old Anderlecht midfielder, who doesn’t expect to play against Cyprus.

“The intensity and quality of the training is greater than at Anderlecht,” he said. “I have a lot to learn here. I’ve received advice from [Assistant coach] Thierry Henry, for example. You listen to people like that. [Coach Roverto] Martinez congratulated me on my good championship debut. He liked my versatility”.
