"Brussels still enjoys the confidence of UEFA" for the national stadium

Brussels still enjoys the confidence of the UEFA (the Union of European Football Associations) in the National Stadium, which is supposed to host the Euro 2020 football matches, the Euro 2020 committee in Brussels said on Friday in a statement. "We are aware that there are problems, but we were kept informed by the organising committee from the start of the project. It is still possible to complete the project according to the schedule", said Martin Kallen , CEO of UEFA Events, during a workshop that brought together the 13 host cities of Euro 2020 on Wednesday and Thursday in Nyon, where UEFA is located.

Euro 2020 will be held for the first time in 13 European cities, including Brussels. A new national stadium has to be built on parking lot C of Heisel in Grimbergen, on a site belonging to the City of Brussels but located in the Flemish area.

However, there are delays indicated in the file, to the extent that one wonders whether the "Eurostadium" will be ready in time, or whether it will ever be completed at all.

"The Belgian football union is well aware of the obsolescence of our infrastructures, and the candidacy for Euro 2020 is in line with the philosophy of the Belgian Union for new stadiums and in due course the Belgian Union will choose the best organisation under the best financial conditions for the national team matches", said Koen De Brabander, the general secretary of URBSFA.
