Nafissatou Thiam arrived home with her heptathlon gold medal on Sunday

Nafissatou Thiam arrived home early Sunday afternoon, with a brand-new gold medal around her neck. The 23-year-old from Namur won a gold medal in the heptathlon event at the European Athletic Championships in Berlin. She also won gold at the last Olympics and World Championships.

Nafi Thiam received a massive round of applause when she arrived at Brussels-National Airport. Visibly tired, the heptathlete now plans to take a rest period. Voted athlete of the year by IAAF, Nafi Thiam has become the third athlete to win the heptathlon gold medal at three major world tournaments. The others were British athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill and Swedish athlete Carolina Klüft.

“I’m going to continue push myself and try to improve every day”, she said on Friday after receiving her medal. Her trainer is Roger Lespagnard. “I would never have imagined I would win three gold medals three years ago. It’s crazy! I am of course very proud".
