Glyphosate: Carlo Di Antonio wants to reopen the debate at European level

The Walloon Environment minister Carlo Di Antonio (cdH) wants to reopen the debate on Glyphosate at European level. He plans to add it to the Walloon government’s agenda for September, he told La Libre Belgique on Saturday. He also spoke about the fact that Monsanto, which produces and sells the week-killer Roundup, has been ordered to pay an American gardener 289 million dollars in damages.

A US tribunal ruled that Glyphosate, a neonicotinoid found in Roundup, is carcinogenic and Monsanto didn’t give sufficient warnings about how dangerous its product is.

Minister Di Antonio says “the fact that Glyphosate is dangerous seems to be have been very much established today”. “When we take all these new elements into account, I feel we need to reopen the debate at European level. I am going to add it to the agenda for the next Walloon government meeting on Thursday the 23rd of August. I hope to convince my colleagues that we should all work together and join the fight. I also want to convince the other regional and federal ministers that we should all ask for the debate to be reopened at European level. All these new elements that have emerged recently are deeply concerning”, he told La Libre.

Carlo Di Antonio also appealed to Federal Agriculture minister Denis Ducarme (MR). “Minister Ducarme said he would ban private commercialisation. There was even an announcement to that effect. Ideally, I want the general public to be unable to buy these products by next spring. To fix a date for a ban to be implemented”.
