Brussels firefighters win Belgian Fire Games

The Brussels firefighters won the Belgian Fire Games third edition. The capital’s corps will represent Belgium at the World Police and Fire Games, to be held in Chengdu, China, next year. The Eastern Limburg firefighters came second.

It was the third time, Sunday, that the Federal Public Service Interior organized the Belgian Fire Games, the firefighters’ national Olympiads. Some 126 firemen, from across the country, participated in the sports competition, which took place on the Provincie Limburg Opleiding Training (PLOT) site, in Genk.

Fire women and men must compete in six disciplines to test their physical condition, team spirit, and technical capabilities.

When the competition ended, Brussels and Limburg firefighters were ex-æquo. A rope pulling contest, using a fire hose, was then organized and the capital’s firefighters won. They will have, therefore, the honor of wearing Belgium’s colors during the World Police and Fire Games in China in 2019.

The World Police and Fire Games gather biannually some 12,000 participants coming from over 70 countries. The event is considered as the second most important sports event in the world after the Olympics.

The Belgian Fire Games are meant to stimulate collaboration between relief zones on the whole Belgian territory, while generating fire vocations.
