Antwerp’s Bosuil stadium will be completely renovated. This was confirmed by the Jupiler Pro League football club’s Press President Paul Gheysens and mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) during a press conference on Saturday.
Antwerp has never hidden the fact that it wasn’t happy about the idea of sharing its facilities with Beerschot Wilrijk, which is currently in the Proximus League (D1B). At one point, the communal administration was planning a new stadium that would have been built on the Petroleum-Sud site.
Thanks to Gheysens, the boss of the construction company Ghelamco which was the losing candidate in the purchase of RSCA Anderlecht, the old Bosuil stadium already has a new gallery. It was opened on the 25th of November last year and has 3,257 more seats that the previous one.
The Bosuil stadium was constructed in 1923. It has hosted the national team’s biggest matches, including derbies against the Netherlands, the semi-final of Euro 72 against West Germany (1-2), and the replay between the 1963-64 European Cup winners Sporting Lisbon and MTK Budapest (1-0). It currently has 16,649 spaces.
Antwerp is currently 4th in Division 1A with 15 points in 8 matches.
