Security will be tightened up on Sunday for RSC Anderlecht’s home game against KAA Gent. This was decided at a Monday afternoon meeting on security for the match, at which measures such as thorough searches at the gate were decided.
The aim is to avoid incidents similar to those that caused the interruption of the Standard-Anderlecht match at Sclessin on Friday evening.
Alderman for Prevention Alain Kestemont, acting for mayor Eric Tomas, explained that, as a precautionary measure, no details would be released on police arrangements for the match.
The police will back up the private security detail at the gates of the stadium so that thorough searches can be done. The police Proof and Identification team will also receive additional resources. Its task will be to look for troublemakers and monitor surveillance camera footage.
Police from the Midi precinct are going to Liège on Tuesday to analyse Friday’s incidents, Kestemont said. “Many of the supporters involved have already been identified,” he disclosed.
A working group has been formed to do everything possible to prevent the sale of tickets to supporters identified as having caused trouble in the past. Comprising representatives of Sporting Anderlecht, Brussels-Midi police and the communal authorities, it will also study the issue of reinforcing security for next season.
"All measures are being taken to guarantee public order on Sunday and make sure the match goes well,” Kestemont said.
A security meeting is held before each match organised at the Constant Vanden Stock stadium. It involves mainly representatives of the police, the private force in charge of gate security, the fire department, the Red Cross and the football club.
