French air-traffic controllers strike: limited impact in Belgium

Wednesday’s strike by a French air traffic controllers’ union is having a limited effect on Belgian air traffic. A few flights were cancelled and several others delayed at Brussels and Charleroi airports. At Zaventem (Brussels airport), Brussels Airlines cancelled one of 4 flights to Nice. 3 Air France flights, to Lyons (one of the airports most affected by the strike), Nantes, and Bordeaux, were also cancelled late in the afternoon. Several flights of the low-cost airline Ryanair were also cancelled, amongst others, those to Barcelona, Porto, and Malaga.

As for the remaining flights, some delays were announced, including to and from France and Spain. “The impact is rather weak so far, but we recommend travellers be in touch with their airline,” pointed out Florence Muls, Brussels Airport spokesperson.

In Charleroi, Ryanair flights to and from Bordeaux, Santander and Nîmes were cancelled.  French air-traffic controllers are protesting against work schedules and  pensions. The strike may continue until Thursday and again from April 16th to 18th, and from April 29th to May 2nd. One consequence of the strike is is that a portion of the air traffic that would usually travel through French airspace will now have to use the airspace of other countries. There is currently some congestion in the air over Germany and delays are likely.
