The number of Syrian refugees goes above 4 million

The number of Syrian refugees has gone above 4 million. The number of refugees has gone up by 1 million over the last few months, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) said on Thursday.

The number of refugees fleeing the conflict, which started in 2011, has gone up by a million over the last 10 months, the HCR said in a press release. “This is the biggest number of refugees for a single conflict in a generation”, says the High Commissioner Antonio Guterres. “This population needs the world’s help. They live in extremely precarious conditions, and are falling deeper and deeper into poverty”, says Mr Guterres.

Most of the refugees (4,013 000) are in countries neighbouring Syria, according to figures from Turkey, which has taken in almost half the refugees (1.8 million).

The HCR says there will be 4.27 million refugees by the end of the year. There are also 7.6 million refugees within Syria.
