Brussels Airlines will not fly over the territories of Iraq, Iran and the Caspian Sea, disclosed its spokeswoman Kim Daenen. This revelation follows the warning issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to companies flying over these regions, whilst Russia conducts military invention in Syria against rebel positions.
“We do not have any routes which would result in us flying over these regions,” Brussels Airlines stated.
As for other airline companies, Dutch airline KLM has said that it will continue to fly over Iran, taking the view that flying over the territory remains safe. However, Air France has already altered the flight path of its aircraft over Iran and the Caspian Sea, according to German newspaper Die Welt.
The deployment by the Russian Army of surface-to-air missiles constitutes a risk for airlines present in these areas. The intensification of Russian missile strikes has led EASA to send a warning to its members on 9th October (last Friday). “Missiles reaching Syria cross over airspace above the Caspian Sea, Iran and Iraq, where airline routes are also operated,” indicates the European organisation based in Cologne.
