Male Belgium resident arrested with 870,000 Euros at Italy-Switzerland border

A 54-year-old Turk living in Belgium was arrested by customs officers as he tried to enter Italy from Switzerland with 870,000 Euros. He was accused of money laundering. His vehicle, the Euros and three mobile phones were seized by the Italian Finance Guard.

Asked if he was travelling with any cash last Friday, the man answered no. But his “restless behaviour” alerted customs officers who decided to run a check.

Customs revealed in a press release on Wednesday that 595,000 Euros had been found bundled up in newspaper under the front seat and a further 275,000 Euros were discovered in the boot.
