Brexit: Tusk pleads with Theresa May for “velvet divorce”

The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, proposed to the new British Prime Minister, Theresa May, that the EU and the UK should have a “velvet divorce.” He was speaking with Mrs May on Tuesday.

He wrote on Twitter, “Told PM @Theresa_May today that we need an orderly, calm #Brexit, something like a ‘velvet divorce.’”

The two leaders spoke on the telephone in the afternoon, stated Mr Tusk’s spokesman.

Theresa May, succeeded David Cameron last week, following his resignation after the vote in favour of the UK’s exit from the EU, which took place on June 23rd.

Mrs May will go to Berlin on Wednesday and Paris on Thursday. These are her first foreign engagements since taking office as Prime Minister.

The execution of Brexit will patently be on both of her meeting agendas.

However, it is not anticipated that Mrs May will come to Brussels for such a meeting in the immediate future.
