Donald Trump victory – Juncker says Trump will have to learn how Europe works

The President elect Donald Trump lacks knowledge due to his background in business, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said on Friday. He was speaking to students in Luxemburg. “We will have two lost years, until Mr Trump learns about a world he doesn’t yet know”, Mr Juncker stated.

Jean-Claude Juncker said Donald Trump’s election as President “poses a risk to intercontinental relations, at basic and structural level. “We will have to teach the President elect what Europe is made up of, and how it works”.

“It could have harmful consequences, as it brings the transatlantic alliance into question. This is what European defence is based on”, he continued. He then went on to talk about what the billionaire had said during his campaign. “His attitude towards refugees and non-white American citizens does not reflect European feelings and convictions”.

“During his campaign, Mr Trump said that Belgium was a village in Europe.. which is only half true”, he joked.

In June, Belgian papers reacted strongly to Trump declaring that Belgium was “a beautiful town” during an electoral meeting. He was obviously confusing the country and its capital, Brussels.

The High representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, told Deutsche Welle that “it is in our interest to work with him, but it is possible that his political priorities could distance America form basic European principles”

The Foreign Affairs Ministers will meet in Brussels on Sunday evening to discuss the consequences of Donald Trump’s election. Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker have invited the future President to come to Europe “as soon as it is convenient”.
