A Belgian suspected of links to Al-Qaida remains in interrogation in Yemen

A Belgian suspected of being a member of Al-Qaida by Yemenite authorities has still not been reached. The Honorary Counsel in Yemen has been trying to get in touch with him, La Libre Belgique said on Friday. The man was arrested at the beginning of January in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. Two other people, a Somalian and a Portuguese, were also arrested.   At the beginning of December, the Yemenite Home Affairs minister said that one of the three men “was found in possession of Al-Qaida slogans”.

According to the Foreign Office, the minister told the Belgian embassy in Ryad that the “interrogation was still ongoing”. The man is in the hands of immigration police, and is not wanted by police in Belgium.

According to a source in Yemen, the expat has been living in Yemen “for some time” and arrived in Sanaa through another country. He will probably be deported.

The Yemen embassy in Brussels has officially said they know nothing.
