Barn swallows herald spring in Belgium

The first barn swallows of the year were spotted in Sainte-Marie-Chevigny (Luxemburg region), Brussels, and Tirlemont (Flemish Brabant) last weekend. “Due to the mild weather, swallows are here (…)   somewhat earlier than in previous years,” according to natuurbericht.be, the information website for Natuurpunt, the Flemish equivalent of Natagora, on Monday. The first barn swallow of the year was spotted last Saturday in Tirlemont, whereas Brussels and Sainte-Marie-Chevigny welcomed their first birds on Sunday. This is 2 days earlier than in 2013 and 2014, but major bird migrations are expected for the end of March.
