A “baby-boom” in Bellewaerde: three bison born in two months

A European bison was born in Bellewaerde last weekend, the animal park revealed in a press release on Monday. That makes a total of three baby bison born in two months, the park’s managers say. They are even calling it a “baby boom”. Bellewaerde has said the birth of these bison is very important for the park, as they are part of a breeding program that aims to reintroduce the species to the wild. The babies are a female and two males. There are now 9 European bison at the park.

The species completely disappeared from the wild after the Second World War. There are currently 5,046 European bison in the world. Some of the bison at Bellewaerde will be reintroduced into the wild with the help of the Rewilding Europe project and WWF Romania, the press release said.
