Eurobirdwatch: 157 species of migratory birds registered in Belgian skies

Eurobirdwatch, an annual event launched in 1993 and which took place in 41 European countries this weekend, revealed the presence of 157 different species of migratory birds above Belgium. “Weather patterns are essential for migratory birds,” explained Koen Leysen from Natuurpunt, who organised the event. “Migratory birds took advantage of last week’s strong north-easterly wind. And birds that have not left yet are enjoying our current Indian summer. There was therefore very little movement this weekend,” he added. A total of 74,711 migratory birds were counted in Belgium this weekend, far fewer than last year’s 298,000 birds.
