A bowhead whale has been visible from Ostende near Raversijde on the Belgian coast since Friday afternoon. The Natuurpunt organisation said it is a spectacular animal that has never been seen in Belgium before.

“The bowhead whale species can measure up to 20 metres long and weigh between 60 and 100 tonnes”, says Dominique Verbelen, from Natuurpunt. “This whale generally lives in arctic waters and prefers pack ice”. There are around 10,000 to 40,000 individuals in the wild.

The organisation says the whale currently visible was seen near the Scilly Isles in February. It was seen near Brittany last year.
