The Brussels International Film festival will open for its fifth edition on Thursday, bringing together moviemakers and actors from around the world.

French actor Fanny Ardant will be the guest of honour, while the film Three Thousand Years of Longing with British actors Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba will premiere at the close of the festival.

The festival will have three competitions: the International, National or Director's Week categories. Events will include retrospectives, talks with notable screen personalities and open-air screenings.

Les incontournables

The festival will open with the French film Final Cut, with French stars Romain Duris and Berenice Bejo known for L'Auberge Espagnole and The Artist respectively. Filmed by award-winning director Michael Hazanavicius, the work is about a film crew making a low budget horror film but who accidentally unlock a zombie curse.

The closing film Three Thousand Years of Longing by George Miller is about Tilda Swinton's character who encounters a djinn (played by Idris Elba) at an academic mythology conference in Istanbul. The djinn (genie) offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

The urban thriller Entre La Vie et La Mort is set in Brussels and was directed by Giordano Gederlini. The film follows a detective father and daughter. Gederlini found the Brussels cityscape and frequent rain the perfect setting for his film noir.
