Hidden Belgium: Walrus

‘Like home, but better,’ the owners claim. They could be right. This was once an old Ghent bar called Salon Napoleon overlooking the Coupure canal.

It was transformed by a young couple in 2012 into a relaxed brown cafe furnished with wooden tables, vintage wallpaper and a pool table.

The terrace at the back has a jaunty seaside mural by local artist Jannes de Schrijver that adds to the charm.

The cafe draws a friendly local crowd, from music fans on Saturday nights to families with bouncy kids on rainy Sunday afternoons.
